Powermate
Platform: PC / Mac Manufacturer: Griffin Manufacturer Site: Griffin Technology
Product Overview: In general the Powermate seems quite durable with its steel casing and quality rubber footing. The Powermate's wheel does seem to be warped while spinning, I think this is because I apply uneven pressure while turning since once I turn the wheel with my whole hand the problem goes away. In fact I was surprised at just how well the wheel turned, it seemed to glide frictionless and required very little energy to turn the knob. The footing was made of clear rubber and stuck to my desk better than I though it would but if it doesn't you can peel the bottom layer off and place the sticky side on a rough surface to give your Powermate that extra traction. Like I mentioned previously the Powermate is built to last the ages.
The Powermate functions as a volume knob, power scroller, or any other thing you want it to do such as play games (I used it for some flash pong). It is also quite stylish with it's sleek brushed metal exterior and pulsing blue bottom it look very futuristic. Adding your own command is very easy with it's user friendly control panel. In total you are able to program six commands for one particular program and no limit on the total number of programs you can use the Powermate with.
Even with it's Superior design and excellent durability/functionality I do have a few complaints starting with the tiny attracted USB cord, just what was Griffen thinking? With the combo of the extension and attached cord it barely makes it from my computer located on the ground up to my desktop. I for one would love to see Griffin make a wireless version so I can plug in my surround sound speakers and control my music from the sofa with the Powermate. My other gripe is the Powermate's support or lack of for Linux distributions such as Ubuntu, I sadly had to learn this the hard way and it took me several hours with 3rd party drivers to get the basic functions back. The Powermate is worth the 45 dollars just because of what it can do and how easy it makes things like volume control become.
