Like the root of most games, or any struggle for that matter real of fictional, the story revolves around good versus evil, light versus dark. The games central story revolves around six races fighting against an evil known as the Mirk, an almost virus like being, that is taking over (destroying) the living universe. With plenty of back-story, presented in a carefully crafted mission system, the game immerses you into a new different universe in a very dark yet fun way. Since the presentation of the story is so important we will leave it at that and let the game draw you in once it’s out.
The interface of the game is reminiscent of StarCraft, in a good way, they are clean, easy to use, over all a very good experience. The learning curve of the game is not difficult at all, that said, it will take time to learn all the controls and get the feel of the flying and combat system.
The visuals of the game are just breathtaking, though it’s a bit dark in theme, everything is just beautiful. Ships, inside and out, are very industrial in look, you can tell they have been through some pretty hard times in their days in service. Space, and the environments you will be playing in are completely believable. The detail of the graphics even on its lowest setting is just outstanding. On very good aspect of the game is that when you’re flying you can view from within the cockpit or in a 3rd person view, which comes in handy when maneuvering in tight spots and in heavy battle.
For a preview this game handles and plays very well, one of the best previews I have played in a long time. The game has very solid gameplay, great control over your spaceships, very good aiming/targeting system, and most importantly the smoothness of the game, maneuvering and shooting is surprisingly good for a preview build. The mission and story design make the gameplay experience all the better.
It’s kind of funny there is no sound in space, so in reality sound would not matter all that much in a space game, lucky this isn’t reality so there is plenty of sound effects to go around. Since there is no sound in space we won’t comment on how real things sound but rather complement them for making things sound like what they would most likely sound like if there where sound. Convoluted you bet, simple point, good sound all around. The voice acting in the game is executed fairly well, the narrator is exceptionally good, but no one will be winning Emmy for best voice over’s here.
Normally in a preview you will not read much on replay value but this isn’t your typical preview either. I found myself starting new missions, or starting the game over again, just to reply parts I really enjoyed. Which says plenty about the development team behind this game, because very few previews are this stable.
The overall concept of this game is very solid and the execution of the concept is in our mind very well done. Tarr Chronicles is easily one of the best space games I have played in many years, and the universe is very captivating/intriguing. The depth of the game will keep players captivated to their computer screens for ours on time.
This game, like life is full of dark troubling times, but there is a glimmer of light and that keeps us and in life and in game going. Tarr Chronicles captures the struggle of mankind in a fun and captivating way, and when this hits store shelves on September 17, 2007 you can bet we will be in line to get a copy (unless someone wants to send me an early a belated birthday present.) Tarr Chronicles is geared towards sci-fi, space, and techno geeks but I think anyone can have fun with this title if you really love action and good dogfights.
