Grim & Mandy (GCN) - Review
High: Lots of characters
Interactive levels
Great Mission mode
Mojo Attacks!
Low: Very repetitive gameplay
Lower class graphics
Very lacking story mode
Ever want to show Grim who is boss, now you can in Midway's video game title "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy." Fighting has broken out all across the town over glowing orbs of dark energy, also known as mojo balls. Billy & Mandy decide to investigate exactly who is causing this chaos.
The story mode is actually very lacking in detail and you see the exact same cut scenes after each battle no matter which character you are using. The battles also seem repetitive as well at the final battle with the one boss. You begin to wonder why Midway even gave more than one character the ability to play in the story mode.
The multiplayer aspect is much better than story mode since you have several options and game types to choose from, unlike the story mode. The multiplayer mode offers some variety to spice things up. The game types vary from familiar game types such as coin matches, or deathmatch to unfamiliar game types such as King Reaper. Each game also allows customization such as total points needed to win or how many lives to begin with. You have a several levels to play at, these levels are based on scenes from the television series such as the pumpkin patch and Jack.
A huge downfall to the game is the constant repeating of various vocal lines or cut scenes. Each character says a line from the TV series before it match, this could have been very cool if they had more than one line to say each time. Like I said previously about he story mode, it constantly reuses the same cut scenes for different characters.
The attacks from each character are melee based. These attacks range from Grim's over used scythe to Erwin fumbling around a huge spell book. Each character also can gather mojo balls and unleash a special attack that features a custom cutscene and the other players incinerating. One of my favorite mojo attacks has to be when Mandy smiles which lets out a blinding light, incinerating the other character.
The graphics are what you would expect them to be for a game based off a cartoon. Although compared to other melee games such as super Smash Bros. or Mortal Kombat this game really stand no chance. It features undesired levels. Characters, and objects. This really does not affect the core concept of the game, to pit all the characters in The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy against each other.
The Largest plus of "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy" is the large amount of characters you are able to play from the series. It seems everybody and their grandmother is included. I am a huge fan of the TV show and love playing as Fred Fred Burger or one of the many other characters such as Jack from the pumpkin patch.
This game also features a mission based mode with 5 tiers with 9 missions each. After defeating all 9 missions within a particular tier you unlock a hidden character. You can also unlock things like concept art or game types for the multiplayer mode, you get these items by defeating certain missions but don't worry each mission will end up giving you some goody. There are even a few co-op missions in each tier, I find these missions more fun to accomplish then the solo mission only because the game was designed to be a multiplayer game and it just seems that bit better when your having fun with another person.
All-In-All The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy is a decent game and a must have if you love the television show. It does have a few pitfalls but it makes up for it in multiplayer fun. Just remember one thing, this is not the next Halo and does not want to be, it just wants a small place where it can settle down and have fun. I would recommend this fighting game to younger kids since it does not show nothing nasty or a.k.a. wrong. My sister who is in the 5th grade absolutely loves it and I hope you do to.
